REVELATION - THE END OF THE AGE OF MAN
(A Synopsis of the Revelation of Jesus Christ)

CHAPTER NINE

The 7 Trumpet judgments – The Fifth & Sixth Trumpets Sound
The 1st Woe – T
he Army from the Bottomless Pit
The 2nd Woe Begins

The 7th and last Seal continues, containing the 7 Trumpets.

Revelation 9:1-12

(1)   Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.  (2)  And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.  (3)  Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.  (4)  They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.  (5)  And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.  (6)  In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

(7)   The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.  (8)  They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.  (9)  And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle.  (10)  They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months.  (11)  And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.

(12)  One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.
(NKJV)

The Fifth Trumpet —  THE ARMY FROM THE BOTTOMLESS PIT  (9:1-12)

The first Woe begins

1. The star falls out of heaven; it is possibly Satan. In Luke 10:18 Jesus said to His disciples:

I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

2. The "star" was given the key to the bottomless pit (also translated: abyss).
3. He opened the abyss and
4. He opened the abyss with the key
5. Smoke rose from it like from a gigantic furnace
6. The smoke hid the sun and sky
7. Locusts came out of the smoke and came down to earth (showing that these were not mere common earthly locusts).
8. The Locusts were given power like scorpions to sting and torment.
9. For 5 months they were given the power to torment with pain like the scorpion's sting
10. They were not allowed to kill.
10. They were not allowed to harm the grass, the plants, or the trees
11. They were not allowed to torment the people with the seal (mark) of God on their foreheads.
12. Their torment was so terrible that men long to die
13. The locusts looked like horses in battle array
14. They had the human faces with long hair, long teeth like a lion and a gold crown on their heads.
15. They wore iron breastplates
16. They had wings that sounded like the thundering of a large army
17. Their king was the angel from the abyss
18. His name is:
In Hebrew Abaddon
In Greek Apollyon
In English Destroyer

God once said to Job: Have the gates of Sheol been opened unto you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? (Job 38:17). There are worlds of beings and of darkness upon which man has never looked.
1. Luke makes it clear that this ‘pit’ is the abode of the demons

Luke 8:31
Jesus asked him, saying, "What is your name?"  And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him. And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss.

2. John states that Satan will be temporarily “jailed” there during our Lord’s reign on the earth.

Revelation 20:1-3
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss.

3. The Antichrist (i.e. “the beast”) will ascend out of this pit.

Revelation 11:7
Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.

Revelation 17:8
The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction.
4. This pit is not the lake of fire, for that is the final ‘prison’ for Satan and all who follow him.

Revelation 19:10
Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Revelation 20:10
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are.

The First Woe
The first woe is now past.
Question: What is the first woe?
Answer:   The 5-month torment of the army from the bottomless pit (abyss).

Revelation 9:13-21

(13)  Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,  (14)  saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates."  (15)  So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind.  (16)  Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them.  (17)  And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone.  (18)  By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed — by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths.  (19)  For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

(20)  But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.  (21)  And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
(NKJV)

The Sixth Trumpet — THE ARMY FROM THE EAST (Revelation 9:13-21)

The second Woe begins
The Fifth Trumpet Judgment brought Suffering — The Sixth brings Death

1. The order is issued from a voice within the four horns of the golden altar.
(the golden altar of incense)
2. The order is to release the four angels who are bound at the river Euphrates.
(the Euphrates was the promised boundary between Israel and the world nations)

Genesis 15:18
...the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates."

3. They were prepared and held in readiness for a specific time
God has always had His "time periods" that have been set since the beginning of time

Galatians 4:4
But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son

Mark 1:14-15
Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.

John 7:6-9
Then Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come."

John 7:8-9
You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.

Matthew 26:18
And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'"

Ephesians 1:10
That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ.

Luke 19:43-44
For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation."

Mark 13:33
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.

4. At that specific time they are released
5. Their mission is to kill one third of the people on the earth.
(one fourth had already been killed in the 4th Seal, so we can conclude that possibly up to one half of 6 to 7 billion people die by the time the sixth trumpet judgment is completed)

Matthew 24:21-22
For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved.

6. John heard the number of the mounted troops:
duo muriades muriadoon — literally "two hundred thousand thousand". (200 million).
7. He saw the 200 million horses
a. Their heads were like the heads of lions
b. Their mouths spewed out fire, smoke, and brimstone.
c. These three plagues kill the one third of mankind referenced in #5 above.
d. They have fire power both in their mouth and in their tails
e. Their tails are like serpents with a head also on the tail
f. With their tails they torment
8. He saw the 200 million mounted horsemen
9. Their breastplates were fiery red, hyacinth blue and sulfur yellow
10. There is no real information given regarding the riders, as it was the "horses" that caused death and torment.

AND STILL THEY DID NOT REPENT

The State of their Society
1. The Apostle Paul says, ‘evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived’ (2 Timothy 3:13)
2. Also Paul speaks of ‘perilous times,’ which will come ‘in the last days’ (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
3. Peter and Jude also speak of them
4. It is a period of abounding demon-worship
5. Instead of fearing, loving, and trusting in God, people will put their confidence upon unclean spirits, invoking them for guidance, and placing religious dependence in their impious falsities.
6. In connection with this demon-worship, will be the revival of idolatry.
7. Along with all of this will be a pagan state of morals:
a. Murder —  a most common crime
b. Sensual and selfish passion —  a sad and havoc time of human life, with no serious thought by leaders
c. Leaders will tolerate feticide, infanticide, homicide —  and all forms of sin against human life.
d. Sorceries, impure practices with evil agencies —  will be the norm in those days.
e. Tampering with one’s own or another’s health —  the drug culture will have it hay day.
8. The world has heard the Gospel and has refused it.

The Nature of the Judgment visited upon this society
1. It is evoked by a cry out of the four horns of the altar. It comes from the immediate presence of God, and therefore with the sanction of God.
2. Here the voice is for letting loose of the powers of judgment. The implication is that God’s appointed way of forgiveness has been (at least temporarily) set aside.

The most frightening thing about Revelation chapter 9 is not the judgments that God sends but the sins that men persist in committing even while God is judging them.

In the hand of the Lord is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs.
(Psalms 75:8)

I wonder how full is the cup of God's indignation with our society today?
